So, how you all doing with the storm? Who all got some time off? I didn't even try to head in yesterday, I have 30 miles of rural driving to get to Greeley, figured I would get there and end up heading right back. I was right, City Manager shut the city down around 11:00, for non-essential personnel. I don't know about the city today, but I'm not going anywhere.
A white Christmas for sure this year. Enjoy the time off, or if you have to be out, be careful.

Yep, City shut down at about 12 yesterday afternoon. Its nice to have the day off today, although I have spent most of it shoveling snow so my wife good get to the hospital to visit her sister who delivered her baby last night.
To bad though, my parents are stranded in Texas, on their way out to spend Christmas with me and my kids. So all this time off, and my guests will just barely make it here for christmas.
Oh well.
Merry Christmas to all.

An unbelievable storm. I am in southern CO. The office is located in Cañon City. All of the surrounding areas got hammered, road closings, office closings, standed motorists, etc. All right outside of town. The city of Cañon City? Green grass and dry sidewalks. Just like there was an invisible roof over the entire town. Very strange...

We are getting some snow this AM here in Salt Lake Valley which probably means Colorado will probably get some more. Your big storm totally went around us though. Our airport was packed with travelers who had cancelled flights. Hope you are all dug out now. Any roof failures? Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I haven't heard of any roof failures yet. The storm you are having now is supposed to break down over the divide, and have minimal impact on the front range. Good thing, I finally got out yesterday, 10 miles of county road, mostly one lane plowed out, 3' - 7' drifts. I have an Excursion, but that didn't help when some oncoming jackass didn't slow down, or yield, so I took the ditch/drift to avoid the collision. They kept going!
I was supposed to have Christmas Eve with my family out at my house, but am thinking of cancelling. If I ended up in the ditch, and I'm used to country living, I don't want to put my siblings, mother, or grandkids in harms way.
Oh well, thanks for the vent.
Merry Christmas!

It started again this morning. Cañon City won't dodge the bullet this time. It's been snowing for about 3 hours and we probably have about 2 inches already. Coming down hard.

Yup, I'm watching this one, we have a prepaid two night stay at a condo in Keystone starting tomorrow night. Might have to delay in the morning and shoot for the gap between the storms.

Missed the first night, snowed in again. Got out Saturday, ran up for a quick trip. Came back yesterday, the road was freshly plowed as it had blown shut again, but as we came through, and the wind was still blowing, I don't know if it's open this morning.
Could make tomorrow interesting, trying to get to work.

I made it in OK, a few whiteouts, damn wind won't quit out on the plains. I'm loaded up some work and am going to head for home at noon. Don't want to be snowed out from home!
I thought I read somewhere earlier in the year that due to the El Nino, we were supposed to have a warmer drier winter. Whatever....

Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else, either.
CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm. Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.
No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.
No one looted.
Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.
Nobody expected the government to do anything, either.
No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera. No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.
Nope, we just melted the snow for water.
Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow-engulfed cars.
The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.
Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families.
Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.
We fired up wood stoves, and broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.
We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die."
We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.
Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.
"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate." It does seem that way, at least to me.
I hope this gets passed on. Maybe SOME people will get the message. The world does not owe you a living.

Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest hurricane to strike the US since 1928. 1800 people died. 700 people are still missing. Sustained winds of over 120 mph. Katrina caused 11 tornados. 25-28 foot storm surge. Water came in almost a mile inland in some places. Many homes had over 8 feet of water in them. Economic losses are in the $70-130 billion range. Insured losses are in the $45-65 billion range. There are over 30,000 FEMA trailers in Mississippi alone and families have been living in them for over 15 months.
The Gulf Coast is DESTROYED. Do you get it?
Go ahead and put on your "extra" shirt and put some more wood on the fire........
What is that about walking a mile in another man’s shoes?

There are just no words to describe your kind, Bob. None. Comments like this lead me to believe you have started "pulling on the jug again" and presently have your head completely lodged in your anus. Giving you a good solid punch in the nose would give me only a little satisfaction. Businesses were washed away along with the several thousand homes. Some towns completely lost their economic center. Many people have lost everything including hope.
And, I have a very good job. Part of my job is to try and educate morons like you. Frustrating though it is.

There is no alter ego, Bob. But I did notice you worked on your reply all night. At least 3 edits! You have a well deserved reputation on this board for arrogance and abrasiveness. You might be advised to scale it back some, though. I suspect this board is all you have left.

I go straight to active posts when I come to this website and did not notice that this was a regional thread. I have deleted my posts. Did not mean to intrude.

No offense was meant. Actually, there is no specific reference to Katrina. It's just that here in Colorado...I think we are pretty proud of being independent and not always relying on government.
It is not that government should never get involved in a natural disaster, but I do wonder about people that stay in an area known for disasters that keep getting damaged and always expect the taxpayer to bail them out.
Hurricane....take a valium. You sound a little over the top yourself. It's not as if I'm out protesting about my tax dollars being sucked out of my wallet...it's just a statement about us Coloradoans????
Your references to Uncle Bob were way out of line. Actually....he's one of my favorites on this forum and you could probably learn a lot from him. While he is obviously quite a character....at least he has some.

Snowing quite heavily in the Salt Lake Valley right now, so Colorado should be getting this shortly. It is also supposed to be down in the minus digits over the weekend. Sometimes it is not bad to seldom go out and do inspections, especially in weather like today. Posts: 262 | From: Midvale City, Utah | Registered: Feb 2003

I've been rather hesitant to take a job out of Colorado, but with this cold and snow....mmmm, Texas is sounding better all the time.
I will really miss it truthfully. It's been home for a good number of years. 2 weeks left with more snow on the way...aahhh!!!
